Newly released on January 22nd, You is the refreshingly honest and minimal sophomore EP from Wellington-based artist James Hunter. Following on from James’s debut EP Last Little While released in June 2020, You is a step back in pace from the energy of Last Little While to a more contemplative space.

Originally hailing from Auckland, James now calls Wellington home. He has been creating music from an early age, alongside performing in shows and theatre. He currently writes, produces and records his music himself, and last year’s lockdown restrictions enabled him to write both EPs from the comfort of home.

James’s stripped-back approach to his production suits the four tracks of You well: they’re gentle ballads in a classic alternative-folk style that allow his rich voice to shine. Neatly balancing acoustic guitar, ambient backings and unobtrusive bass with vocals, each song comes across like a snapshot of an afternoon spent musing over relationships and their different facets: they’re examples of an artist unafraid to express his vulnerability in dealing with the various colours of life. Not cloaked in unnecessary subtleties, the lyrics are heartfelt and honest, which lends the songs an especial innocence and charm through their candour. Standout moments in the EP are when James croons in a soothing falsetto: his voice in such instances is reminiscent of the likes of James Blake and Active Child with its purity of tone and range.

You is a commendable sophomore offering from a young, developing artist showing much promise, and we are excited to hear James’s future offerings.

To support the release, James is intending to play shows in Auckland and Wellington in February 2021.
