Roll up folks, and nab thy good selves a ticket to the premier of Auckland venue The Tuning Fork’s brand new band-night series ‘Thursdays I’m In Love’! Featuring the sublime trio of rising acts Leaping Tiger, Lilly Carron and K M T P for its debut, the event is launching this Thursday the 15th as an all-ages monthly showcase of up-and-coming, newly established and household names from across Aotearoa. It’s a unique chance to discover and get to know new favourites on a monthly basis.

The event will sit alongside the comedy series ‘Fork ‘N Funny’ as The Tuning Fork’s monthly offerings, and each month’s poster will feature artwork by an Aotearoa artist or designer.

Leaping Tiger

Tāmaki Makaurau electronic maestro Leaping Tiger released his stunning debut album Porcelain Orca Whales in 2020 to rave reviews. Strewn with guest appearances by the likes of Church & AP, Disciple Pati, JY Lee and Maxwell Young, the album is an exciting and intriguing listen and showcases his adventurous and slick, genre-defying style. Leaping Tiger is one to watch!

KATIE: WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT THE TUNING FORK SHOW?

Leaping Tiger: I’m really looking forward to the size and energy of the venue, every time I’ve played at the Tuning Fork the energy’s been crazy.

WHAT’S THE BEST SHOW YOU’VE BEEN TO?

Hands down King Krule at Silo Park for the Auckland Arts Fest a couple years ago. It was outdoors, pouring down with rain and all the kids in the crowd were wearing cheap ponchos, moshing hard and singing at the top of their lungs not giving a fuck.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MUSICAL MEMORY?

Sneaking into Laneway when I was 16.

Lilly Carron

Self-styled as “lo-fi dream pop”, Lilly Carron, hailing from Muriwai, is an act to keep tabs on, and her star is on the rise. Releasing her debut EP Messy Mind in December last year to critical acclaim, she is quickly carving a space for herself within the Aotearoa music scene and has already appeared at her first music festival, Nest Fest. Messy Mind sees Lilly sing of the heartaches of young adulthood, her swoon-worthy vocals dancing mesmerisingly above minimal instrumentation and blissful beats.

With her melancholic yet relatable songwriting, Lilly is quickly establishing herself with a loyal following.

Oooo I’m excited to vibe out!! I love playing at the Tuning Fork, always filled with love 💕 So amped to see the others up there too 💕

WHAT’S THE BEST SHOW YOU’VE BEEN TO?

Oooo one of my favourites recently was The Butlers and There’s a Tuesday, they played at Tuning Fork, maybe last year?? Boogied the night away, lost my voice. Those are the best.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MUSICAL MEMORY?

This year at Splore, hands down the best festival I have been to thus far.

Mine is a person haha, my sister recently showed me ‘Dirty Mouth’ by Alice Phoebe Lou, now I’m hooked

Marking the beginning of a new chapter after previously releasing several tracks under the moniker b-lush, 2020 saw Tāmaki Makaurau act K M T P release their debut EP P.S. C U SOON. via Tāmaki Makaurau label Sunreturn. Following on from their first single “I Love My Friends”, released in 2019 to instant acclaim, the indie EP is an emotive collection of six deeply personal tracks that saw K M T P quickly establish themselves as a student radio favourite.

For Keria of K M T P, music was always part of their environment growing up, whether attending Flying Nun gigs with family as a kid, or starting to sing and play guitar and piano at an early age. High school offered an opportunity to connect with other passionate musicians, and they rounded out their instrumental repertoire with the addition of bass and keyboards/synths, alongside beginning to experiment with recording and live music production.

A familiar face to many from their Polyester days, Keria has also played with Ethan Moore’s “bedroom stadium pop” project Dirty Pixels.

KATIE: WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT THE TUNING FORK SHOW?

Keria: It’s the first time I’ve performed at the Tuning Fork so I’m pretty excited to just be up on stage and vibe out at a new venue. The lineup is also super great!

WHAT’S THE BEST SHOW YOU’VE BEEN TO?

One of the standout shows for me was Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Fazerdaze at the St James. Such an amazing venue and a wicked cool time.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MUSICAL MEMORY?

My favourite musical memory would have to be going on tour with my old band Polyester. Great times, good people, good vibes.

A RECENT DISCOVERY THAT YOU’RE IN LOVE WITH:

Music-wise, I recently “discovered” a Trade Me listing for a Casio CZ-1 keyboard, which I managed to snag up! You can catch it at the live shows being played by our keyboardist, Ali.

A LITTLE-KNOWN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF:

While I prefer to play with a full live band, I usually perform all of the instruments during recording. I play all of the instruments on my EP, but I’m hoping to have some band member and other features on the new album.

WHAT ARE YOUR MUSICAL HOPES FOR THE NEXT YEAR?

I’m starting production on my new album, so I’m hoping that will be done before the end of the year, aiming for a slick summer tour with the band.
